About PTE Core General English Test
PTE Core general English test is a computer-based test that evaluates your speaking, writing, reading & listening skills. At the same time, PTE Academic is a computer-based test that evaluates your academic level of speaking, writing, reading & listening skills. One should choose PTE Core general English test for migration and work purposes in Canada. On the other hand, one should choose PTE Academic for study purposes globally and work & migration visas for Australia & New Zealand. You can take a two-hour test from any convenient test center. However, at present, PTE Core general English test is available for all migration processes in Canada.
Who Needs PTE Core General English Test
People who aspire to apply for migration & work visas to Canada are required to choose PTE Core general English Test. In addition, you can choose PTE Core for Canadian citizenship.
Understand the PTE Core General English Test Format
There will be three parts in PTE Core, which include:
Speaking & Writing(Part-1)
Reading(Part-2)
Listening(Part-3
Speaking & Writing modules
This part consists of seven different question types, which take approximately 50 minutes to answer. In this section, your speaking & writing skills will be assessed by assigning English you might hear regularly.
The seven different question types include:
- Personal Introduction
It is an opportunity for the students to get familiarized with the PTE technology and help them prepare for their speaking & listening questions. Still, the questions do not contribute any marks. A personal introduction is also a warm-up to Read Aloud.
- Read Aloud
How to answer this question
This task requires reading a written text aloud, and you will be given 30-40 seconds to read the text and prepare.
- Repeat Sentence
You must repeat the Sentence as you heard it for this question type.
- Describe Image
You will see an image on-screen, so you need to describe the Image in detail.
- Respond to a Situation
This question type consists of a listening & a reading prompt describing an everyday situation.
- Answer Short Question
In this question type, you must answer the question in one or a few words.
The audio will play automatically, and you may also see an image.
After the audio is finished, the microphone will open, and the recording status box will display “Recording.” So, immediately start speaking in one or a few words.
Things to keep in mind
- Speak clearly
- Be confident when speaking.
- Your speaking should be finished before the progress bar ends.
- You are not allowed to reply to the audio. You can play the audio just once.
- Pausing long can lead you to danger because if you wait for more than 3 seconds, your answer will automatically be saved and show the status ‘completed,’ which means you have lost the opportunity to give your answer.
- Summarize Written Text
In this question type, you need to write a summary of 25-50 words. 10 minutes will be allocated to complete this task.
- Write Email
In this question type, you need to write an email of approximately 100 words to complete the task. You will get 9 minutes to finish your task. Remember that you should write less than 50 and more than 120 words.
Reading Module
This part contains five different question types, which will take approximately 30 minutes. As an integrated skills test, PTE Core is a one-question type that assesses two skills. For instance, reading skills assess your writing skills as well.
- Reading & Writing
Familiarize with each question type:
You must select the appropriate word from the drop-down list in this question type. You will be given a text with words that need to be added.
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers
This kind of task comprises a reading text. You need to read the text carefully to answer the multiple-choice choice, multiple answers. In this task, more than one response is possible.
Select all the correct answers that are relevant to the text. Click on the options to select, and you can also deselect your answer.
- Reorder Paragraph
In this question type, you need to restore the main order of the paragraph. So, you need to select the text boxes and move them across the screen.
You can move the text in two ways.
- Just click and drag the answer to where you want to put it.
- Click on the box and use the arrow button to place your answer.
- Fill in the Blanks
In this question type, you must drag and drop the words across the screen to fill in the blanks appropriately. You will be provided a passage and a list of words in the blue box to fill in the blanks. There will be more words than the blanks, so you cannot use them all.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer
This kind of task comprises a reading text. You need to read the text carefully to answer the multiple-choice choice, multiple answers. In this task, more than one response is not possible. You have to choose only one answer.
Select the correct answer that is relevant to the text. Click on the option to select, and you can also deselect your answer.
Listening Module
This part consists of seven questions, and you will get approximately 30 minutes to complete the tasks.
- Summarize spoken text
The allocated time for this task will be 8 minutes to listen and write your summary; you should write between 20-30 words. At least 20 words and, at most, 30 words are appreciated. So, write at least 20 words, but stay within 30 words.
If necessary, you can use cut, copy, and paste options in this section.
- Multiple choice, Multiple answers
You will get a recording file to listen to in this question type and then answer the multiple-choice question. More than one correct response is possible here.
The audio recording will start automatically, and you can only listen once. So, you need to select the correct answers from the list, and you can unselect any items as well.
- Fill in the blanks.
You need to listen to an audio and answer in the blanks. The recording will start automatically, and you can only listen once. To answer, click on each gap and write down your answer. You can also move to the following answer by clicking the tab button.
Can take notes on the erasable notepad when the audio recording starts playing.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer
Candidate need to listen to an audio recording and answer the multiple-choice answer.
While you will get several options for this question type. Among those, you have to select the one.
There will be option to click to select the answer. Click on different options if you want to change your answer.
- Select Missing Word
You need to select the most appropriate word or group of words to complete the audio recording.
The recording will start playing automatically, and you can only listen once.
You need to click on the option to select the answer, and you will have the option to change your answer.
- Highlight Incorrect Words
You will listen to an audio and be aware when highlighting the words. Select the words that are different from the transcripts.
The audio will start playing automatically, and you can also listen to it for once.
Click on a word to select, and you can also deselect the word within the allocated time.
- Write from Dictation
In this question type, you need to listen to an audio recording, and then you need to write it down in the box below. When you listen to the audio, take notes in the erasable notebook. Also, be aware of your spelling.
