IELTS Exam preparation: One question that we get asked a lot is to introduce ourselves, may it be on IELTS speaking test or in an interview. It may seem like an easy question but if you do not know how to answer it, you are doomed. Although we have lived our whole lives with ourselves, nothing comes to mind when someone asks us this particular question. At that moment in IELTS Speaking test we feel like we do not know ourselves at all. We feel like Jon Snow, and the questioner looks at us as the Night King.
So, what should we do then? What do we say? How do we answer the most difficult question in the universe?
Let’s see……
Start Simply in IELTS speaking test:
Begin with the most obvious thing, your NAME in IELTS Speaking Test. Nothing can go wrong there unless you forget that too. That is highly unlikely but not impossible. Start with your full name. Do not mention your nick name; it is better if you avoid that in a formal situation.
Example:
I am James Reynold. You can call me James.
My name is Arshil Khalil. Please, call me Arshil.
That doesn’t look so hard, does it? Actually, it isn’t. Our mind goes to an override when we are nervous. Therefore, it is better to stay calm in these situations. We will talk about that in some other article.
Don’t Forget Your Roots:
Mention your HOME. We cannot leave that, can we? We love our home but is there any logic to mention your birthplace in an interview? Of course, there is. Your home is who you are. The examiner or the interviewer needs to know the basic information about you, and you never know if the person talking to you belong from the same place and you bond instantly. That is a long shot but not impossible. Anyway, let’s see how to say that. There are lots of ways to say this.
Example:
I am from Narnia.
I originally come from Mirzapur, but currently I am staying at Mirpur.
Note: We can use a range of words like hail from, inhabitant of, reside in etc. Choose whichever you like but do not ruin your structure of the sentence by trying to be fancy.
About Education in IELTS Speaking Test:
One of the most crucial parts of your introduction is your education. We invest our youth in education, and the most important thing is that the person sitting opposite to you want to hear what you have achieved because we get judged by our results. Therefore, talk about your Highest Educational Qualification at first. If the IELTS speaking test interviewer wants to know more, talk about other educational qualifications like S.S.C, H.S.C, A Levels, O Levels etc. If you have any certificates, talk about that too like IELTS, PTE etc.
Example:
I have an Honors degree in English from East West University.
I have recently graduated from Dhaka University.
Some of you may not have the greatest of CGPA, so if you do not feel like mentioning it, avoid it. Try to prepare an answer to why your result is not that good. Do not be honest if the answer makes you seem like a complete idiot. Answer in your favor.
About your Experience in IELTS Speaking Test:
In the IELTS examination, you will not be judged if you are not working for anyone. There is no need to be embarrassed about it. It is hard to find a job. However, if you are going for a job interview, mention your Workplace. If you are currently unemployed, talk about your extracurricular activities. Don’t tell me that you did nothing during your school, college or university lives. We have all done something like playing football, taking part in debates, or organized something. Look for it, you will figure something out. If you still cannot find anything, make something up. Do not get stuck.
Example:
I am currently working at Hogwarts as a Language Trainer.
I am the head of HR at La La Land.
I volunteer for the local animal rescue team.
It would be better if you engage in a club of your school, college, or university which will come in handy in the future. Look to volunteer. There are lots of NGOs looking for people like you, so work there and gain experience. The examiner wants you to talk, and the job interviewer wants to see if you are capable of taking responsibilities. That is why work experience is important.
Family:
Talk briefly about your FAMILY. I know you may think that why don’t we talk more about our family more, they are important to us. Yes, family is important but is irrelevant here. You are talking about yourself, sodo not go into details like your father’s or mother’s name. Keep it simple.
Example:
There are four family members in my family including my father, mother, younger brother, and me.
Interest:
End your introduction with your HOBBY. There is no need to go into details. Keep it on the surface level. I know many of you have lots of hobbies and eagerly want to talk about it. I can understand the sensation but this information is unnecessary. We talk about it just for the sake of it. Therefore, try not to speak more than two or three sentences about your interests, and do not be shy about it. Speak your mind on what you like.
Ex:
I like watching football matches a lot, my favorite football club is Real Madrid. Keeping different kinds of fishes is also a hobby of mine.
Conclude:
When you are done talking about yourself, let the other person know. Do not just stop all on a sudden, otherwise there will be awkward silence which is not pretty. Trust me, I have been there. Therefore, say something that will conclude your introduction.
Example:
That is all about me.
That’s it.
If you follow this structure, you will easily be able to talk about yourself. Try to follow the order that’s mentioned. This is a tried and tested way to introduce yourself. You can use it anywhere like in IELTS, interviews, universities, schools, colleges etc. Try to be confident and have a smile on your face.
